Why Egypt Packing Is Different

Most couples pack for Egypt like it's a beach vacation. And it is. But it's also an ancient history deep-dive with dress codes, sun exposure at temple sites, and days that swing from resort pool to pharaoh's tomb in the same afternoon.

That's the thing nobody warns you about. You need two completely different wardrobes — and if you only pack one, you'll spend your honeymoon either sweating through denim or getting turned away at temple entrances.

Egypt doesn't fit one suitcase strategy. Here's how to pack it right.

Clothing for Her

Linen is your best friend. Lightweight linen pants and maxi skirts cover you at temples without making you feel like you're wearing a sleeping bag in the heat. Pack two or three and rotate them.

Short shorts and sleeveless tops are completely fine at your resort. The moment you walk into a temple, mosque, or sacred site, shoulders and knees need to be covered. A few modest cover-ups that double as beach layers solve both problems without adding weight to your bag.

Pack one or two dinner outfits you actually feel good in. You will have romantic evenings — dress for them.

Clothing for Him

Linen shirts and lightweight chinos. That's the formula. Breathable, travel-friendly, and appropriate everywhere from a Nile felucca to a rooftop restaurant in Cairo.

Same temple rule applies — shoulders and knees covered at sacred sites. Leave the tank tops for the pool and the heavy denim at home where it belongs.

One pair of smart casual shoes for dinners. Comfortable walking shoes with real grip for everything else. You will walk more than you think.

Red Sea Beach Essentials

Reef-safe sunscreen only. The Red Sea coral is genuinely spectacular and regular sunscreen chemicals damage it. Read the label before you pack it.

Rash guards are worth their weight for snorkeling excursions. They protect you from sun, light jellyfish contact, and equipment rubbing. Water shoes handle the rocky reef entry points that flip-flops absolutely cannot.

Bring a waterproof phone case or an actual underwater camera. The fish at these reefs are ridiculous. You want proof.

Sun and Heat Survival

SPF 50 or higher. Non-negotiable. Egyptian sun hits different — especially if you're coming from somewhere that has actual clouds.

Wide-brim hat, quality UV-blocking sunglasses, and an insulated reusable water bottle. You will use all three every single day. The water bottle especially — staying hydrated in that heat is not optional, it's survival.

Travel Documents and Money

Tourist visa first. Get it online before you leave — it's easy, it's fast, and doing it at the airport is a headache you don't need on your honeymoon.

Buy travel insurance. Boring advice that becomes the best advice the one time you actually need it.

ATMs exist in tourist areas, but arrive with some Egyptian pounds already in your wallet. Smaller vendors, market stalls, and a surprising number of local spots are cash only. Credit cards work at larger hotels and restaurants but don't count on them everywhere.

Health Kit

Pack antidiarrheal medication, motion sickness tablets — Nile cruises and desert safaris both earn them — oral rehydration salts, hand sanitizer, and any prescriptions in original packaging.

Pack more than you think you need. Hunting down a pharmacy when you're not feeling well is not how you want to spend an afternoon in Egypt.

Electronics and Adapters

Egypt uses Type C plugs at 220 volts. If you're coming from the US, you need a universal adapter. Don't assume your hotel has a spare.

A portable power bank is essential for long sightseeing days when you're away from outlets for hours. Download offline Google Maps for Cairo, Luxor, and wherever else you're headed before you leave home — data can be patchy in places and getting lost without it is not the adventure you're looking for.

What to Leave Home

Expensive jewelry. Heavy denim. Anything you would genuinely be upset to lose.

Leave room in your suitcase deliberately. Egypt's markets — Khan El-Khalili especially — will make you want to buy things. Give yourself the space to say yes.
